About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can make a real difference to your appearance, especially if you have noticeable drooping eyelids or bags underneath your eyes.

This operation combats some of the changes caused by ageing. The operation dramatically improves these signs of ageing, usually with excellent results. The procedure can either be done on your upper or lower eyelids or both, depending on your needs and your surgeon’s advice. If you want to deal with the symptoms of ageing for your whole face, usually a neck and face lift is carried out first, followed by the eyelid operation. It is possible, however, to perform both procedures at the same time, which may be both more convenient for you and also less expensive.

During your eyelid operation it is not possible to remove altogether the soft mimic wrinkles (laughter-lines) on the lower eyelid and outer edges of the eye which are caused by the natural movement of face muscles and are permanent. They can be reduced a little by this operation, but can be dealt with effectively by injections of Botox, or skin filler such as Restylane, or by Laser Skin Resurfacing, all of which can be carried out at our clinic.

Eyelid surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia. However, some patients prefer to arrange for sedation or a general anaesthetic. The price of the operation is increased with these options, and you would have to stay in the clinic overnight.

In your operation your surgeon will measure the exact amount of skin to be removed and then administer local anaesthesia starting at the outer edge of the eyelids and working inwards. For the lower eyelids a fine incision is made just below the eyelash. For the upper eyelids a strip of skin is removed in the natural crease of the eyelid, then the excess skin is removed and the fatty tissue is exposed and also removed. Lastly, the incisions are sutured with very thin thread and small adhesive strips are placed over the sutures. Compressive bandages are applied, and you will be taken to rest for a few hours before being discharged from the clinic.

Some temporary swelling of the eyelids is usual after your operation, and you will most likely be told by your surgeon to apply a cold damp compress regularly, and to wear a compress and bandage over your eyes at night for a week or more. Your fine sutures can usually be removed after 5-6 days. We recommended a stay in Brno after surgery of about 6 days. For up to 4 weeks some bruising may be visible which can be hidden by make-up. Your eyelids may feel dry for a while, and the eyes may be sensitive. Sunglasses should be worn. You should avoid wearing contact lenses for 2 or more weeks. Your scars will fade to faint white lines and are not normally visible after a short time.
